Palmerton’s Spanish teachers have had a high rate of turnover since Senor Elvir left after working at the high school for decades. In 2021, Palmerton hired Senora Failla, but in 2022, she left due to another job opportunity. Last school year, Palmerton did an online course with a virtual teacher, but up until this year, Palmerton has not had an in-person teacher. For the 2023-2024 school year, Palmerton hired Senora Perla Perdomo for Spanish 1-3 as well as AP Spanish.
Senora Perla Perdomo was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the US in 2016. As soon as she moved, she went to New Coner to redo her 12th grade. Then, she went to La Salle and the Busca program to get her associate degree in liberal arts. Afterwards, she went to Kutztown University for her B.A. in teaching. When she graduated from Kutztown, she became a teacher associate for 2 years at the Spanish Immersion Learning Center in Allentown. She believes the reason she decided to teach Spanish was because she wanted to create a connection with other people by speaking different languages.
Someone from the learning center recommended Palmerton for her first year of teaching, and when she came in for interviews, she loved the energy and Palmerton became her first choice. Now she's in her second semester, and she really enjoys it. She loves the students and how respectful they are about her language barrier since Spanish is her first language.
Perla says, “I want my students to believe in themselves…”. She loves the connection she can have with them and remarks, “My students make me so happy…” She loves the staff as well and values how they make her feel comfortable and loved. She feels at home here at Palmerton, and we’re glad to have Senora Perla Perdomo as a Bomber.
